A solid, complex-enough Football game. Full 100-yard field, but it seems a bit narrow.

Screen Shots |
NFL Football is one meaty game. Although you can't run any trick plays, like flea-flickers, etc., this game is fun. The only complaint I have with NFL Football is that
it's really a full, 60-minute game! It's clear that this must have been a common complaint, since later games, like NBA Basketball, NHL Hockey, and NASL Soccer all run on an accelerated
clock. Although, I guess that with play calling, you do benefit from a slower clock. Still, Super Pro Football used the faster clock. The only improvement I'd have made to the graphics would have
been to have the football be a small brown football-shaped graphic, as it is in Sharp Shot.

Placement of the Trademark symbol next to the Intellivision log on the back cover changed.
Note that the Trademark symbol on the back cover is aligned with the base of the Intellivision
logo (rev. A) |
Note that the Trademark symbol on the back cover is aligned with the top of the Intellivision
logo on all other revisions |
There were also some variations of the 'Running Man' and Mattel logo on the back cover.
Back cover of rev. A (U.S.A.)—note ® next to Mattel Electronics logo in
the center of the 'running man' rectangle |
Back cover of revs. C and G1 (Hong Kong)—note ™ next to Mattel Electronics logo in the center of the 'running man' rectangle |
Back cover of rev. G1 (U.S.A.)—note ™ next to Mattel Electronics logo in the center of the 'running man' rectangle and missing ® in the 'available from Mattel Electronics' text |
Some minor changes in the graphics within the manuals exist, as well as the
revision of the title "NFL Football" to just "Football" or "Pro Ball" within
the manual's descriptive text. The (rev. A) manual also mentions how the game
looks on a black and white TV, while the (C) revision does not.
Then, there are the changes to the playbook content. (Incidentally, has a
rev. A playbook ever been found?) Between rev. B and rev. C, the descriptions
for entering a play on offense were improved, in that you didn't actually have
to read and understand all of them at once. The directions were broken
down into run, pass, or kick, as illustrated below. What I find especially
humorous, though, is that the later revision added a typo! Check out "Choose
an ELIGIBLE REEIVER" in the TO PASS section on rev. C!
Revision B - condensed instructions: An attempt to avoid the image that
Intellivision was too complicated?
|
Revision C - revised instructions: Broke the instructions for entering plays
on offense into three categories, and added descriptions of the sound effects
used to provide feedback, as well as passing advice. But, it also added a typo
in the TO PASS section - REEIVER instead of RECEIVER.

The crowd roars as the team runs out onto the field. There aren't all that many sound effects, but they're satisfactory. The centers never move, either. And, it's actually, truely, 60 minutes of grueling gridiron action. |
