Yet another excellent Data East arcade adaptation for the Intellivision.
| Graphics: 5
Sound: 5
Replay Value: 4
Notes: 1- or 2-player game; developed by a couple of PlayCable hackers
Screen Shots |
This is one of the best games for the Intellivision!
Unfortunately, Mattel didn't really start getting arcade licenses of
any kind until just barely before the crash.
Bump 'n' Jump was an outstanding adaptation. The sound is
very well done, as are the graphics. Gameplay seems dead-on, and the colors
and movement are superior. According to
the official site,
this game was developed by a couple of hackers who had figured out how to use
their PlayCable unit, along with a PC, to make an Inty development machine!

Bump 'n' Jump was one of the first (and last) games from Mattel to credit
people who worked on the game right on the box. Interestingly, according to the
official site, the main developers, who were not Mattel employees, are not
credited. Only the title screen artist and some other Mattel folks are credited.
Seems there were some rules about who was allowed to be listed...

In addition to the credits and UPC being removed from the back of the box,
the two box variants by INTV for Bump 'n' Jump vary not only in the presence of the
FOR 1 OR 2 PLAYERS text on the front of the box, but also
by what's displayed on the bottom flap of the box. The FOR 1 OR 2 PLAYERS
version has the UPC symbol on the bottom flap, while the other does not.

BSRSteve, Hankster and others
have noted that there are also different types of cardboard used in some
versions of these boxes. At least two variations of materials have been noted: a
smoother, brighter interior vs. a more tan-colored, somewhat rougher stock in
others. This site does not document box variations due to different materials used
in manufacturing of the box. If a correlation between the materials used and some
other substantive change in external appearance appears to exist, it may be noted.
A total of six Bump 'n' Jump manual variants have been documented.

The title screen was quite an impressive animated one, for a Mattel game. |
|
Speeding down the raceway through the various seasons was presented quite well. |
Well, it's not really an Easter egg, but more of a bug with potentially good
side-effects. When jumping, if you can position your car in just the right
way, you land on a "secret" road. If you can manage getting back to
the right place by the end of the season, you could exploit this to get the
50,000 point bonus. Full details are at
The Digital Press.
